Portal Technology

Objective: Create and replace existing portal with an upgraded portal offering. The portal system provides both intranet and extranet services for a large Entertainment company.

Portal Challenges
  • Install and configure Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) access so that users are authenticated using network passwords
  • Create a federated portal cluster that includes three portal servers, one portal database server, two web servers, and one network deployment server, all acting as one system
  • Configure the two portal web servers in the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) to provide direct access for personnel and suppliers from any internet connection
  • Implement one server for Web Services for Remote Portal (WSRP) technology as the primary Producer for the portal
  • Implement Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for secure connections to the portal

Project Constraints and Challenges
  • Project scope included upgrading not just the Portal, but also the Oracle Toolset technology underlying the core Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
  • Time constraints with over 5,000 global portal users accessing the system at any given time, the window was extremely limited for installation and cutover
  • Provide documentation and knowledge transfer for internal IT personnel to enhance system maintainability, minimizing the need for future consultant support
  • Complex technical environment with several critical systems, any of which could jeopardize daily operations including sensitive data, managerial and vacation schedules, and extensive user information
  • Complex technical environment with several embedded components that were all affected by the upgrade
  • Limitations on available client personnel to engage in the project

Benefits
  • Technological efficiencies, fixes, and enhanced user features were provided through implementation of the new server hardware, upgraded system architecture, and upgraded EnterpriseOne Toolset (8.98)
  • Global accessibility and security
  • Greater control and ease of use for users, network employees, and the data organization

Tools and Technology
  • Install and configure 6 clustered servers and 4 stand-alone servers for non-Production environments (development and quality assurance)
  • Install and configure 9 clustered servers for Production
  • Used Portal Web 2.0 standards
  • Implement Oracle Toolset 8.98
  • Configure Websphere Application Server and Portal Server version 6.1
